5th Induction Ceremony
The Fifth Girard Hall of Fame Banquet, held on December 1, 2001, paid tribute to a remarkable group of individuals who left a lasting impact on the world of sports and their community. Phil Koppel, a dedicated coach at GHS, was recognized for his leadership and role in nurturing the career of HOF receiver Paul Warfield. Donald Swegan, a Harvard athlete with 10 varsity letters and All-Ohio Conference honors, was celebrated for his multi-sport excellence. James Nace, a basketball standout, earned All-Ohio recognition and led his teams to an impressive record at Mount Union College. Dr. Richard Cannon, a multi-sport athlete and course record holder in golf, showcased his sporting versatility. Anthony Latell, known as a top defender in football, became an Ohio State Senator. Richard Ambrose, a two-sport star and accomplished golfer, earned his place in the Hall of Fame. Charles Pusin, a high-scoring basketball player, left a lasting mark on GHS records. Sal Ponzio, a football standout with academic excellence, achieved success in cycling. Lisa Ezzo, a state champion long jumper and Yale University letter winner, was recognized for her athletic achievements. Steve Mislay, a dedicated supporter of Girard's sports community, was acknowledged for his longstanding commitment to fundraising and supporting local athletes. Together, these inductees showcased excellence in sports and community involvement.
