Paul's individual performances in track motivated Girard High School athletic officials to initiate a cross country running program in 1972. Paul was an All-Ohio section Cross Country and Track after finishing 3rd in the AA State meet in 1972 and 6th in the State Class A 2-mile run in 1973. He went on to letter in track and cross country at Bowling Green University and finished 18th in the Mid- American Conference Championships in 1976. Paul qualified for the 1980 Olympic Marathon Trials with a time of 2:20:56 at the Mardi Gras Marathon. He served as attack official for the 1986 Big 8 Conference meet.
