The night of October 17, 1952, buzzed with excitement as Ken Vaughan executed a daring maneuver, snatching a pass from two Brookfield half-backs and securing the decisive touchdown in a triumphant 26-0 homecoming victory. Throughout his senior football season, Ken exhibited prowess by making 17 receptions for 262 yards and clinching 5 touchdowns. An integral part of the three-time Steel Valley Conference Champion Girard High School football team, Ken's impact extended beyond football. While his football achievements were remarkable, his prowess extended to basketball. Serving as co-captain alongside Ray Beach, he led the 1953 basketball team. Their collective leadership secured the district championship for the third consecutive year. In the tournament, Ken's skill earned him the moniker of "the slickest big man," and he played a pivotal role in the Girard Indians reaching the final four of the state tournament in 1953. His standout performance was underscored by a total of 128 points scored during the tournament. Ken Vaughan's excellence earned him the title of 1st Team All-Steel Valley Conference Basketball in 1953. In terms of single-season scoring, he trailed only his teammate and GHS Hall of Famer Ray Beach, amassing an impressive 355 points. Beyond his athletic accomplishments, Ken was elected as the junior and senior class president for the class of 1953, a testament to his leadership qualities. Additionally, his academic achievements were recognized as he became a member of the National Honor Society.
