After his successful high school career, James continued to shine in the world of college basketball. He pursued his passion at Mount Union College, where he earned four basketball letters. His dedication and talent were evident, leading to his selection as 1st team All-Ohio Athletic Conference three times during his college years. James's impact extended beyond his individual achievements. He continued to display his leadership qualities by captaining the Mount Union College basketball teams in both 1953 and 1954. Under his guidance, these teams achieved remarkable success, amassing a combined record of 40 wins and only 14 losses.
