Tony was instrumental in directing area youth in theYoungstown Golden Gloves. He was All-Air Force Champion in 1948 and 1949 in the 118lb. division. He won two Texas State Golden Gloves bantamweight titles and was voted "Boxer of theYear" in 1950 and 1951 by the SanAntonio Press. Tony owns an impressive amateur record of 120 wins and 8 losses. He turned Professional in 1951 and compiled a 30-6-2 record. He is a member of the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame (1984) and was inducted into the Legends of Leather Hall of Fame in 1992.
